The last five years have seen the Avs experience a rather odd ebb and flow. Last season they finished with 39 points, which over a full season is 66.6 points, we'll call it 67. The previous four seasons saw totals of 88 in 2011-12, 68 in 2010-11, 95 in 2009-10 and 69 in 2008-09. Only 2009-10 saw them reach the playoffs. Going by the pattern, this year should be an up season. The difference is this, they have the potential for that level of play to stay there. Bringing in Hall of Fame players to coach and manage is by no means a guarantee to produce. Somehow, though, the Avs are making a go of it. With Joe Sakic as Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations, Patrick Roy as Head Coach / Vice President of Hockey Operations and Adam Foote as Defense Development Consultant, the organization has brought in more than just winning experience, those three bring a level of accountability. All of them put it on the line each and every game and it's very clear that Patrick Roy along is going to bring enough emotion to demand that from every player on that roster.
This 2013-14 Avalanche team is loaded with young, established talent and veteran leadership. P.A. Parenteau was signed last offseason and Ryan O'Reilly and Paul Statsny bring a steadiness to the lineup. Incredible young talents Matt Duchene, Gabriel Landeskog and this year's first overall pick Nathan MacKinnon will be centerpieces of the next generation of the organization. This group appears to genuinely enjoy each other. They can be seen joking around amongst themselves on social media and the end of their first game this year against the Anaheim Ducks just had the look and feel of a galvanizing event. The players protected each other and Roy protected the players. It was a fiery moment that showed the Avs are here and they're going to make this work together. After a long five year hiatus of being a league power, the Colorado Avalanche appear poised to take the next step towards consistency, towards excitement and back into the conversation of league's top teams.
